Learning, Growing and Giving Back: Sai Taja Baddala's Cybersecurity Journey 

Long before Sai Taja Baddala began studying cybersecurity, one experience showed him just how personal a cyberattack can be. 

During his undergraduate years, a ransomware attack impacted important academic files and projects. But it also sparked a curiosity that would eventually help shape the direction of his career.

“That experience made me realize how vulnerable digital systems can be and sparked my curiosity about how attackers operate and how organizations defend against them.”

That curiosity stayed with him.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and working as a Systems Engineer at TCS, Sai eventually began pursuing a master’s degree in Cybersecurity at Saint Louis University.

He was drawn to a field that combined the things he enjoyed most: problem-solving, continuous learning, and the opportunity to make a real-world impact.

But as Sai built his knowledge through graduate school, he realized there was another piece he wanted to strengthen. He understood the concepts and theory, but he wanted more opportunities to put what he was learning into practice.

And like many students preparing to enter the cybersecurity workforce, he still had one important question:

Was he truly job-ready?

Bridging the Gap Between Learning and Doing 

When Sai joined CyberUp, he was looking for hands-on experience with cybersecurity tools, labs, and real-world scenarios.

He also wanted support preparing for the next step in his career, including resume building, interview preparation, and learning how to position himself for entry-level cybersecurity opportunities.

CyberUp offered him a structured environment to keep building both his skills and his confidence.

At first, one of his biggest challenges was understanding how different areas of cybersecurity fit together. Security operations, threat detection, vulnerability management, and incident response could feel like separate pieces of a much larger picture.

There were also moments of self-doubt, especially when he compared himself to people with more experience.

Through consistent practice, structured labs, and support from CyberUp instructors and mentors, those pieces gradually began to connect.

Then came a moment when Sai realized something had changed.

While working through hands-on labs and simulated security investigations, he found himself analyzing alerts, tracing suspicious activity, and explaining the reasoning behind a potential security incident.

He was no longer simply learning cybersecurity concepts.

He was applying them.

“That was when I realized I wasn’t just learning theory. I was actually developing practical cybersecurity thinking.”

Building Confidence Through Practice

As Sai became more comfortable working through unfamiliar scenarios, he also developed a stronger approach to problem-solving.

Instead of jumping to conclusions, he learned to investigate step by step, validate information, and think critically about security events.

That mindset became one of the most valuable things he took from the CyberUp experience.

Sai also reached another important milestone during his journey by earning his CompTIA Security+ certification, strengthening both his technical foundation and his confidence.

Over time, his perspective on himself began to change too.

CyberUp helped him move from seeing himself primarily as a student learning cybersecurity to someone capable of applying those skills in real-world scenarios.

His path into cybersecurity had taken him through mechanical engineering, systems engineering, graduate school, and hands-on cybersecurity training. Rather than seeing those experiences as disconnected, Sai began recognizing how each one contributed to the professional he was becoming.

“My journey has taught me that progress is not always linear, but every step adds value.”

Giving Back to the CyberUp Community

Sai’s connection to CyberUp did not end when he completed training.

He chose to stay involved.

Sai has volunteered with CyberUp’s PowerUp program and served as a Teaching Assistant for the next cohort, helping learners who are beginning many of the same experiences he once faced.

For Sai, giving back has personal meaning.

He remembers the uncertainty that can come with starting a cybersecurity journey and wondering whether you have enough knowledge or experience to move forward.

Now, he has the opportunity to help others work through those same questions.

“I enjoy helping new learners who are just starting their cybersecurity journey because I can relate to the uncertainty they may feel.”

Teaching and volunteering have become part of Sai’s own continued growth as well. The experiences have helped him strengthen his communication, leadership, and mentoring skills while reinforcing his understanding of cybersecurity concepts.

Now, Sai is helping newer learners build the same confidence and practical skills he worked to develop himself.

Continuing the Journey

Today, Sai is pursuing entry-level cybersecurity opportunities, particularly in security operations, SOC analysis, incident response, and related areas.

He describes the job search as both challenging and educational. Each application, interview, and technical discussion gives him another opportunity to refine his skills and better understand what employers are looking for.

While searching for the right opportunity, Sai continues moving forward through hands-on practice, volunteering, teaching assistance, and ongoing learning.

His goal is to find a cybersecurity role where he can contribute to security operations while continuing to grow technically and professionally.

For someone looking at cybersecurity from the outside, the field can feel intimidating. There is always another tool to learn, concept to understand, or skill to develop.

Sai’s advice is much simpler:

“Don’t wait until you feel fully ready - just start.”

He knows firsthand that confidence does not appear all at once. It grows through practice, persistence, asking questions, and continuing to learn one step at a time.

Sai hopes his journey can encourage others who may be wondering whether there is a place for them in cybersecurity.

“I hope my story shows that transitioning into cybersecurity is possible with the right mindset, effort, and support system. Your background does not limit your future in this field.”

Learning, Growing, and Giving Back 

Sai’s journey shows that growth in cybersecurity is not always about following a straight path. It is about continuing to learn, building confidence through experience, and using what you have learned to help others along the way.

From strengthening his hands-on skills and earning Security+ to volunteering with PowerUp and supporting the next cohort as a Teaching Assistant, Sai continues to take meaningful steps toward the cybersecurity career he is building.
